cultural mellieux : ireland, political history, protest tradition, hunger strike
nation : one not seen to be directly involved as main player in afghanistan cf french troop deaths in afghanistan
use of small media: - photo phones - up to large scale - becomes issue for state, suprastate
use of symbolism : - church , red cord, hanging, hunger strike
use of threat and ultimatum : emotional conflict, baiting the ego of state apparatus, punditry and issue framers, unpredictability
timing: - personal situation - present media hot issues
character formation : muslim, afghan, immigrant, outsider
picture painted : desparation
recent mirrors : hostages and kidnappings in occupation/conflict zones
etc......


why the solution :

- move situation on
- appeal "house of god" is respected - psychological manipulation [ aspects of psychological terrorism] is reduced
- ordinary rights of access for worshippers - remains active "house of god"
- vesicle bound nature of place is denied, and present situation state extreme solution prevented
- potential line of communication and humanitarian assistance is maintained
- keeps ball in protesters court
- iconic possibilities of potential event shifted.

etc etc.....

obviously one can argue for other positions, i dont necessarily think this is the best solution
